DIY Butcher Block Island with Bead Board

Our New Kitchen Island

Well I did a post a couple of weeks ago that was a sneak peak at the finish Butcher Block Island my hubs and I just made and wanted to show you the piece by piece breakdown on how we did this. Its about 99% finished it still needs the trim piece to be attached to the front, but no one would know by looking at it.

Basically I wanted to update my old island from Ikea. Here is a pic:

After

Which was fine, but I wanted something I could put some barstools up to and let the kids sit while I make lunches/bake whatever…

So I did some brainstorming and found on Pinterest some great ideas on how to make an island out of a desk, cabinets, tables whatever.. and tried finding a desk to use. BUT, I forgot about the old cabinets down in the basement the previous owners left. DUH! So my hubs broke those apart and we decided to use the one with the perfect length (not too long but just big enough for our smaller kitchen)

Here is a picture before (in basement)

Lovely Right?? Well we decided to de-attach the left part of the cabinet and use that as the island. So to give some life again this is what we did:

1. Sanded the ….. out of it (see picture below)

mail

2. Prime the …… out of it! My daughter helped out for a bit, she LOVES to paint but not for long because that primer stinks!

The cabinet was a little wobbly, so we cut wood to support the unit and place the blocks underneath (you can’t seem them).

3. Bought Bead Board and cut to size and attached to sides of cabinet

Here is another picture with the bead board on each side. The hubs did all the cutting thanks to my Father In Law (who let us borrow his awesome saws)!

4. Cut trim length and glue on with liquid glue and small nails.

5. Purchase your countertop- we went with Ikea’s Butcher block because we can drive there, it is about 10 minutes away, pick it up, cut it ourselves and screw it in (all in a sunday afternoon). And its only $130 for the size piece we wanted and that is great for Butcher Block!

6.Add hard ware (I did fill the old holes in with a wood filler and its very easy to do, just get a putty knife and scrape it on) to front of drawer/cabinet.

7. PAINT! Paint the entire unit glossy white and it will look awesome!!! :)

Here are some more After Pictures! We Love our new Island and the kids do too! We got some awesome barstools from Amazon and they have been great too! Let me know what ya’ll think?? Thanks xoxo E

Bigger kitchen in 3 easy steps!

Kitchen FYI

Hi all- Sorry I’ve been keeping up with the sick kiddos and xmas fun! But I realized recently that my kitchen has been a little crazy with the Christmas Cookies, making a new island and baking and just got a LITTLE messy So here are some tips to keep your kitchens feeling BIGGER!

P.S. this is just in time for all those HOLIDAY guests to say, “WOW, Love your Kitchen!”  :).

step 1: Put AWAY ugly stuff!

There shouldn’t be anything on your kitchen counters! I have a coffee pot, paper towel holder and  now moved the microwave and that is all folks! Keep your counters CLEAR and you will feel like you have so much more space. Put away all the little things, organize, put things in cabinets, basement storage whatever. Once a year, clean stuff out, get rid of the things you never use and donate!

step 2 : Refrigerator

Take off everything on the front of the fridge (all realtors will tell you this when you go to sell your house). If you have things on the front it looks too cluttered and messy. (NO FUN!) Keep it clean on the front and clean those handles often (yucky germs on the handles) and it will make your kitchen look much better!

step 3: CLEAN IT!

Clean the floors, cabinets (with wood cleaner), counters, coffee pot, scrub that sink- use mr.clean magic eraser on stainless steel sinks -fyi, appliances, you see it-you clean it! It will feel fresh and new! :) Gotta love windex, it will make your counters/appliances shine!

Here are some pics of my kitchen! I will post this week my DIY on the new Butcher Block Kitchen island how to! And the kitchen has now been so updated, since these pics!

Looks like Granite huh?? Its not- Find out… HERE (They only costs us around $150) yup thats right- we put them in ourselves from Lowes.. :)

What are some tips you have to keeping your kitchen clean and clutter-free? I’d love to hear about them!!!

Butcher Block Kitchen Island

New Island!!!

Well its OFFICAL! We finished the Kitchen butcher-block island last night. The Hubs added the hardware and finished with the caulking! Here is a sneak peak at the before and after… I have to work on the photos for the “how to; DIY” and get you that post later this week!

Here is the before (it was an old cabinet from the basement, pretty old and UGLY!) but we didn’t have to buy any new wood, cabinet or anything .. just re-used the old one by painting it and adding beadboard.

And the wonderful after!

There will be more pictures to come very soon!

Make your Own Stencil for Furniture

Recycled Side Table

I’ve had this side table for about 6 years and it was originally from my Mother-in-law and it was originally a tan color. I then spray painted them black but the black started to wear and didn’t look that great with our new Ikea Ektorp Couch so I decided to make a stencil to paint on top of the table.

To make a stencil you will need:
Black marker
Tracing paper
Construction or thick paper (I used paper to paint on)
Exacto knife
Box to cut on

First trace the design you want with the tracing paper and black marker.

I used scrap fabric from the curtains (old Duvet) I cut up and made into curtains, and
pillows.   Just trace the black marker around the design you would like to be a stencil. Then you will tape the tracing paper to the construction paper to cut out. Cut along the black lines and you will have a stencil.

Now I painted the black table a beige color (same color as my family room walls) and sanded a little bit to give it a milk paint sort of look. Once that dried, I taped my stencil to the table and used a light blue/green color to paint over, I moved the stencil and then taped it, then paint (repeat). And then moved the table back to the same spot next to the couch. Love it! Oh and I did use a poly to give it a nice shiny top coat, and since drinks usually go on this table, it will help protect it.

Here is the Before (Family room with black table):

Ikea Ektorp Couch Review

In LOVE with Ikea Ektorp!

Hi all, So because Everyone that comes to our house asks about our new couch and I’ve gotten some emails about it so I wanted to talk about the Ikea Ektorp Couch.

Ikea Ektorp Loveseat + Chaise Couch

We just bought this in October after I saved the money from one of my design projects and it has completed our family room. We really needed more furniture in our living room. We are having people over all the time and so we put the old couch and REUSED it by putting it in the living room with the love seat that matches it. So I did some research online and found that people were generally happy with the Ikea Couch.

So far, I love it! I’ve washed it once, on Hot with Oxiclean, detergent, and softener and it came out great! I did dry it on low heat for like 10-15 minutes. Here is a picture of us putting it together.

The couch is very soft but still firm. The best thing about the couch is 1. It only took my husband about an hour to put together, super super easy! 2. We (he being around 6 feet tall) and I can both lay down. We got the love seat + Chaise = sectional Ektorp Couch. I lay on one end, and he lays on the chaise and its so nice to snuggle up on!

Overall we are totally happy we got the couch! Its a nice buy, and I’m hoping I get to Ikea when the Slipcovers got on sale for a $1 (which apparently happens once a year) Here are some more pictures of the Ikea Ektorp Couch! Love it!!

Make your own Christmas Wreath!

Burlap Christmas Wreath!

Well, it’s that time of year. Thanksgiving is over and here comes CHRISTMAS!!! I decided this year I would make a new wreath. I found one on Etsy that I LOVED, and thought I would just re-make it! Here is the picture….

yes, it is beautiful! Not sure how much they wanted on Etsy, but I thought why not just remake it. I have a glue gun!

Here are the materials you will need:
many things I already had (I only spent around $10 for the entire project)

Wreath (cone, wood, etc. really whatever you want to use)
Glue Gun
Burlap (find at home stores, or Joann, hobby lobby) 1 yard
Decor for the front (flowers etc..)
Ribbon

Here is a picture of my materials:

Now Take the flower heads off

Cut the burlap about 5 in width, along the length of the 1 yard. You need long strips of fabric to bunch up and hot glue down.

Then start folding and bunching the fabric along the wreath and glue down one piece at a time.

Once the burlap is glued down, place the decor (flowers etc..) how you would like before glueing. Then glue once you decide where to put it.

and VIOLA! Your wreath is done. I decided to hang mine over my fireplace on the mirror and I think it looks great!! :) Enjoy!

Girls Bedding – Reuse Duvet

Girls New Bedding

I updated my girls bedroom this past summer and got them two new beds (new for them, they were from my grandmother’s cousin’s family. I’d been looking for a good deal on a twin set and finally found one! I painted them the same color as their other furniture, which is the beige (from the bathroom color)).

I picked a really nice violet/purple color for the walls and wanted to keep the theme white, purple and a little pink. So here is how I did the new bedding on a serious budget!

  •  I reused their old full duvet, by cutting it up, sewing it into two separate pieces, for  each twin bed.
  • Check potterybarn kids, they will clearance bedroom sets/pieces, bedding etc.. I found the shams online for $5, yes that’s right, $5 at Potterybarn kids and I did have them intialed which costs $7 more, but so worth it!
  • I got fabric at Jo-anns for the duvet (total $10).
  • Found sheets online at Toysrus for $10 for white sheets, walmart for the bedskirt

The girls love their new beds! I will post later how I did the stenciling for their wall behind the beds. The room came out great!

Reuse Old Paint (II)

Make your own Art!

Art is to the eye of the beholder; what my art teachers would always tell me. So in that thought, MAKE YOUR OWN ART!!

I buy canvas when it’s on sale at Plaza Art in Cincinnati, and about 3x a year the canvas goes 70% off. So for this pretty large painting it only cost me about $13 for the canvas (and I always have paint lying around).  I reuse all my old paint; you can paint with the little cans of paint (from Michaels, Hobby Lobby) or even wall paint (it’s the same stuff) acrylic.

One of my good Friends (the one that uses her dresser in the kitchen) has all her own pieces in her house. She was an Art major and her house looks stunning, because every piece is unique. I’m tired of seeing the same pieces from Ikea, Target, and Home Goods. They look like model home pieces, and thats fine, but making your own art is awesome. It makes your home different, charming, and fun!

So here is how I made my newest painting (I also have a tri-paint in the living room as well, of a tree). But this is more abstract.

Basically I started with grey color first.  I did big streaks of “s”s (think waves).. and then started to blop with  my paint brush, here is a picture…

Then just keep doing the same thing over and over.. seriously anyone can do art, it doesn’t have to look perfect, I like art to look like you didn’t really have a direction. Just let your creative side go!

Here it is on my wall, I may still add some color (not sure yet) but I will hang it until I decide :) Hope this help you do some of your own art!

Reuse Your Old Paint

Kids Bathroom Makeover!

Kids Bathroom Makeover

I recently updated my kid’s hall bathroom with some left over paint. The paint was left over from re-painting the girls bedroom furniture. I went to Home Depot and took a drawer with me, they matched it and I gave the furniture a new coat of glossy paint.          (I bought the girls bedroom set very used, and it needed a new glossy coat on top). I had tons of paint left over, and I managed to paint two bathrooms with the extra. The color does look very different on the wall vs. furniture see below…

I updated the kid’s bath (here is how):

* Painting the walls

* Color theme blue/bright green with shower curtain

* 3 white frames with photo of each child (oldest to youngest)

* Painted their names and put hooks in for their towels (Lowes has these hooks, very cheap about $1 a piece).

* Hung picture (already had from previous bathroom at old house)

* Painted the vanity white (had white glossy paint)

* Spray painted hardware

That about does the updates to the bathroom. Now the tile in the bathroom looked awful with white walls (it looked almost purple). With the new glossy beige it has a nice pinky tone, and I LOVE it with the beige/yellowy walls. My husband wanted to take down the 70s tile, but I like the tile now that the walls are painted.  If you hate your tile, think about a different paint color with the tile. It will bring out different colors in the tile (its crazy, but so worth not having to take down all the tile).

Here are some tips on writing your kids names on the walls

  • First draw out how you would like it to look – typography- look up examples on the computer if you must
  • Use an angled brush to paint the letters
  • Experiment with the angled brush first with paint on regular paper how you want it too look with the color/type and then start to paint the wall

(This seemed to help me)

The kids enjoy their new bath and love their names on the walls for their hooks. They know right where to get their towels after bath.

Bathroom Renovation Ideas

New Bathroom? um, Yes Please!!

We are going to renovate our bathroom come this spring, so I’ve been looking up ideas on what to do with our master bathroom. Its very small.. so here are my ideas:

1. paint the whole room (duh..) but even ceiling because I’ve heard it makes the bathroom feel bigger

2. reuse vanity- I’m thinking either stain it, paint it black or white

3. new flooring (some of it is already coming up) we were thinking the fake wood (easy to put in, good with water)

4. put up backsplash around vanity (use left over tiles from kitchen renovation, save $$) or board and batten.

5. new light fixture

6. new mirror (have an extra one, and I think it’ll work I just need to spray paint the trim a different color)

Check out the pics from Pinterest I found: what do ya’ll think?

ps my whole purpose is to reuse what I can of the original bathroom, and keep a small budget.. hmm… excited for Spring so we can get this bathroom redone!!!
